2019 SJIFT Golf Classic Report!
From Scott Nichols, SJIFT Golf Chair
We celebrated the 22nd annual SJIFT Golf Tournament on Monday October 14 at the beautiful Copper River Country Club in Fresno. It was an absolutely gorgeous day. We had a good turnout of 104 players teeing off on the 6415 yard course. We also had about 135 folks come to the dinner event that evening. As always, Copper River did a great job. Thank you Copper River!
We wish to thank our major sponsors: We had two Full Scholarship Sponsors this year, Scott Nichols of HORN, an IMCD Company, and Thomas Lampe of California Natural Colors. Each of the Full Scholarship Sponsors contributed $6000 towards the tournament, and we thank you for your generosity!
We also thank Kathleen Da Cunha of Ruiz Foods for providing an Eagle Sponsorship and supporting the “Ruiz No Whining Hole” where lucky winners received a great bottle of Fresno State wine. Chuck Lambert of Grain Processing provided a Birdie Sponsorship. Bill Smittcamp of Wawona Frozen Foods was our Golf Cart Sponsor. Matthew Berliner of ISC Gums was our Golf Ball Sponsor.
We wish to thank our 19 Tee Box Sponsorships at $350 each: Dave Plowman of APAC Chemicals, Randy Zigmont of American Lecithin, Dale Killen of Barney’s Fine Foods, Bill Dunkle of Batory Foods, Daniel Alexander of BDS Natural Products, Julie Inman of Beneo, Inc., Trish Frazier of Brenntag Pacific, Mike Remmert of Cargill, Ron Pitts of Del Monte Foods, Hanford, J.C. Stubblefield of Gold Coast Ingredients, Robin Becker of Jungbunzlauer, Inc., Chris Bahr of McCormick & Co., Quinn Zweigle of National Raisin, Michael Byrnes of Northstar Chemicals, Igor Moiseev of Olam Tomatoes, Jared Shipman of Orchard Choice/Valley Fig Growers, Greg Beauregard of Sealed Air, Steve Linzmeyer of SPI Group, and Matthew Gallenitti of Vitusa Products.
We received door prize donations of $100 each from: Mike Remmert of Cargill, Dave Plowman of APAC Chemical, Robin Becker of Jungbunzlauer, and Michael Byrnes of Northstar Chemicals.
Special thanks go to Sealed Air, Univar and Brenntag Pacific for sponsoring multiple foursomes!
Many thanks go to our current and past SJIFT Board members that work hard every year to make this a successful event: Trish Frazier, Kady Francone, Kimberly Kirusu, Nicole Miranda, Jordan Bolin, Adam Joppen and Kimberly Williams. A special shout-out goes to Dr. Erin Dormedy and Dr. Carmen Licon, for organizing the student volunteers.
This year’s tournament raised $9,639.36 in Scholarship funds for CSUF Food Science Students! Since the inception of the tournament in 1998, we have raised over $176,187. The success of this tournament is due to the overwhelming support we receive from our sponsors, so again, the SJIFT Golf Committee says THANK YOU!
We had 15 Food and Beverage Sponsors who filled up the golf goodie bags to help keep our costs down, and we wish to thank the following: Dale Killen of Barney’s Premium Foods, Patrick McGovern of Bell Carter Packaging, Trish Frazier of Brenntag Pacific, Dennis Perkins of The Brownie Baker, Elaine Steindler of Carmi Flavors, Randy Erickson of Clif Bar, Craig Rothe of Elite Spice, Brandon Kirchmeyer of GU Energy, Vicky Raulino of Guittard Chocolate, Scott Nichols of the HORN Co, Irena Miles of Jelly Belly, Quinn Zweigle of National Raisin, Meena Haidari of Palmer Holland, Jenny Wu of Pik-Nik Foods, USA and Gary Jue of Valley Fig Growers!
Similar to last year, we used low gross scores and divided the players into three flights. The winners in each flight received a SJIFT Blue Golf Cap and cash envelopes containing between $50 and $100 each! Our chipping challenge winner, the longest and most accurate drive winners and the CTP winners each received $50 cash. We also gave away a brand new Traeger 780 PRO Series Smoker with a retail value of $1326.00 as our grand raffle prize which was won by Herb Gonzales of Lyons Magnus in Fresno! Congrats Herb!
I unfortunately lost my notes of most of the tournament prize winners and the flight winners, so cannot list them here, but you know who you are! Be sure to check out the SJIFT Golf website for updated photos from this year’s tournament.
I do recall the winner of the Closest to the pin for women only AND the winner of the Pot of Gold valued at $360 was Maria Vargas of Dadant. Congrats Maria!
Please join us on Monday September 28th, 2020 for our 23rd Annual SJIFT Tournament to be held at the Copper River Country Club in Fresno!
