SJIFT Scholarship

Golf Classic

San Joaquin Section Color Vertical outlined.jpg

From Scott Nichols, SJIFT Golf Chair

We celebrated the 21st annual SJIFT Golf Tournament on Monday October 15 at the beautiful Copper River Country Club in Fresno. It was a beautiful warm day. We had a great turnout of 132 players teeing off on the 6415 yard course. We also had about 150 folks come to the dinner event that evening. As always, Copper River did a great job. Thank you Copper River!

We wish to thank our major sponsors: We had two Full Scholarship Sponsors this year, Scott Nichols of the HORN Company, and Thomas Lampe of California Natural Colors (FKA San Joaquin Valley Concentrates). We also thank Kathleen Da Cunha of Ruiz Foods, and Jacques Loveall of the United Food and Commercial Workers Union (AFL-CIO) for providing Eagle Sponsorships. Chuck Lambert of Grain Processing provided a Birdie Sponsorship. Bill Smittcamp of Wawona Frozen Foods was our Beverage Cart Sponsor. Matthew Berliner of ISC Gums was our Golf Ball Sponsor and Golf Cart Sponsor. Greg Beauregard of Cryovac/Sealed Air sponsored our Long Distance Hole contest. We also want to thank Ruiz Foods for supporting our “No Whining Hole” on number 8 where lucky winners received some great Fresno State Wine!

We wish to thank our 23 Tee Box Sponsorships at $350 each: Dave Plowman of APAC Chemicals, Randy Zigmont of American Lecithin, Dale Killen of Barney’s Fine Foods, Debbie Sampson of Batory Foods, Jennifer Montgomery of BDS Natural Products, Julie Inman of Beneo, Inc., Trish Frazier of Brenntag Pacific, Mike Remmert of Cargill, Ron Pitts of Del Monte Foods, Hanford, Craig Rothe of Elite Spice, Joelle Mossoe of Eurofins, Phil Kraemer of Foodarom, J.C. Stubblefield of Gold Coast Ingredients, Robin Becker of Jungbunzlauer, Inc., Chris Bahr of McCormick & Co., Quinn Zweigle of National Raisin, Jim Lieskovan of Nationwide Boiler, Michael Byrnes of Northstar Chemicals, Jared Shipman of Orchard Choice/Valley Fig Growers, Kristin Iverson of Pacific Coast Chemicals, Steve Linzmeyer of SPI Group, Sara Stewart of Univar and Matthew Gallenitti of Vitusa Products.

We received some very nice donations from the following supporters:

Stacey Hawley of Flavor Producers ($100)

Christopher Banuelos of Solvay Chemicals ($1000)

Brian Favela of National Flavors ($100)

We also want to thank those who donated towards door prizes, as that helps to keep our costs down.

Special thanks go to Sealed Air, Univar and Batory Foods for sponsoring multiple foursomes!

Many thanks go to our current and past SJIFT Board members that work hard every year to make this a successful event: Trish Frazier, Kelli Williamson, Brittney Cemo, Kady Francone, Kimberly Kirusu, Nicole Miranda, Jordan Bolin, Pam Sweeten, Gary Jue, Adam Joppen and Kimberly Williams. A special shout-out goes to Dr Erin Dormedy, for organizing the student volunteers.

This year’s tournament raised $14,069 in Scholarship funds for CSUF Food Science Students! Since the inception of the tournament in 1998, we have raised $166,548. The success of this tournament is due to the overwhelming support we receive from our sponsors, so again, the SJIFT Golf Committee says THANK YOU!

We had 14 Food and Beverage Sponsors who filled up the golf goodie bags to help keep our costs down, and we wish to thank the following: Dale Killen of Barney Butter, Patrick McGovern of BC Packaging, Trish Frazier of Brenntag, Dennis Perkins of The Brownie Baker, Elaine Steindler of Carmi Flavors, Randy Erickson of Clif Bar, Gabe Bacus of Kraft Corn Nuts, Craig Rothe of Elite Spice, Brandon Kirchmeyer of GU Energy, Vicky Raulino of Guittard Chocolate, Quinn Zweigle of National Raisin, Meena Haidari of Palmer Holland, Susan Gabasan of Pik-Nik Foods, USA and Gary Jue of Valley Fig Growers!

Similar to last year, we used low gross scores and divided the players into three flights. The winners in each flight received a SJIFT Blue Golf Cap and cash envelopes containing between $50 and $100 each! Our chipping challenge winner, the longest and most accurate drive winners and the CTP winners each received $50 cash. We also gave away a brand new Traeger 34 inch Texas Elite Smoker as our grand raffle prize which was won by Phil Kraemer of Foodarom Flavors! Congrats Phil!

Flight A, with a score of 55, went to the foursome of Todd Weaver, Craig Segars, Matt Clawson and Jon Haraldson of Shepard Brothers. They each received a $100 cash.
